| Nursery
Nursery classes are taught using a thematic approach to allow the children to learn a wide variety of topics in a holistic way. The six learning areas are core part of the Nursery curriculum. Those six are Physical Fitness and Health, Language, Early Math concepts, Science, Self and Society, and the Arts. Social and motor skills are emphasized with many activities catering to their physical development and self-care skills. Students are encouraged to be aware of themselves and their belongings. Social interaction with their peers is also an important part of the curriculum along with strengthening their English verbal skills. Teachers will use small group learning to maximize their learning potential when introducing new concepts. Observations and assessments are taken throughout the school year to keep track of their development. Parents also have a chance to visit and participate in open classes. Teachers and parents will have meetings to discuss the progress of the child in depth. Communication books are available for teachers and parents to keep an open line of dialog to ensure a sharing of information on the student's development. Outings and special school functions are also held throughout the school year both with and without parents. Maximum class sizes are 22 with a 1:11 teacher-student ratio with a floating teacher to assist during small group activities.
Kindergarten
In the Kindergarten section class teachers may use both thematic and project approaches. The curriculum is child-centered with all subjects being taught in English with the exception of daily Mandarin lessons. All students starting from K1 will have the opportunity to learn Mandarin on a daily basis ranging from 20-35 min. Cantonese is also an optional class starting from oral lessons in K1 to extended classes that include reading and writing. Within the curriculum children will develop their physical skills, verbal skills, social awareness, self-care, creativity, mathematical concepts, science and curiosity, music and self-esteem. There are learning opportunities that incorporate cultural awareness and teamwork. Kindergarten students have a variety of outings each term that range from parks to the Science museum. Special functions are held throughout the year like our annual sports day, and spring picnic that bring together the school community. We encourage parents' participation in different activities through-out the year. Classroom sizes range from 18 students to 26 students with a 1:13 teacher-student ratio. |
